First Time in Lourdes! 28 August - 4th September 2007 Arrived in storm of lightening. Beauty of Pyrenees Mountains, rugged peaks. A very busy small city - narrow streets filled with crowds, every kind of face from all over the world, smiling quiet faces, many carrying banners and flags. It is warm with fine rain. Mass every day in a different place said for us by our Parish Priest with homily about Bernadette. Visit to village of Bartrés - farm yard, hens, barns and very old Church, Mass, silence. - her childhood home. At the Grotto silent crowds, prayerful - Our Lady's statue: "I am the Immaculate Conception". Huge underground basilica holding 25000 nearly full - silence. The Benediction priests, choir, Cardinal and Bishops - huge numbers of wheelchairs. The sacred Host so large. Eight giant bowls of incense carried head high. Outside Stations of the Cross - silence. Confessions in every language. We visit the City of the Poor. Poor received from all over - given separate room in chalet under trees. Dining hall for 600. Mass in replica sheepfold under trees. Silence, at night - torchlight procession. Everyone a torch bearer, torches all lifted high to greet the Gloria in the Rosary. Sunday - international Mass, 10 Bishops, 150 priests- all nations - our neighbours in hotel, a Japanese Parish. Over all Our Lady watches. Lourdes is about the Eucharist. Back to Dublin - tired but at peace.

Can Project - Africa - In July 2005 Niamh Murray, soprano, climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania in a fundraising effort for Refugee Trust International. The much needed funds were used to help a number of orphanages for children in Kenya. Thanks to all those who helped in any way. This year Niamh's good friend Tess Redmond is off to Benin, West Africa, to teach with the Daughters of the Heart of Mary. Tess is going to help, young girls in Benin, who have suffered abuses of all kinds. Computer, sewing and needle work skills will be what Tess will offer these girls in an effort to help turn their lives around. On Saturday, November 3rd, at 8pm in St Joseph's Church, Glasthule, Niamh will be singing in a concert full of musical favotirites to raise funds for this worthy cause. She will be accompanied by her brother Ronan. Tickets are €10 at the door.
