Sacred Space

We invite you to make a 'Sacred Space' in your day, and spend ten minutes, praying here and now, as you sit at your computer, with the help of on-screen guidance and scripture chosen specially every day.

Something to think and pray about this week

The Canaanite woman in Matthew 15:21 is an unexpected model of prayer: she argues and she persists. This is not the first biblical figure to argue with the Lord: Genesis and Exodus describe Abraham and Moses debating with God. The Canaanite woman is different from the scribes who tried to trap Jesus with arguments. She is begging for her daughter. At first Jesus does not answer her at all. It would have been easy for her to give up in bitterness. She is trebly handicapped: a woman alone in a man's world; a gentile and therefore unclean; and with an afflicted daughter. But in spite of Jesus' silence she trusts him, keeps at him, and bests him in debate. There is something teasing and humorous about Jesus' reply to her. He enjoys that Semitic style of thrust and counter. His first response is what we often experience in prayer: no give. But a mother seeking health for her child is not easily deterred, and Jesus rewards her persistence - I imagine him smiling as he blesses her.
Lord, I need to remember this. When I want something badly, I will keep after you. May I never be discouraged by your silence.

It might seem strange to pray at your computer, in front of a screen, especially if there are other people around you, or distracting noises. But God is everywhere, all around us, constantly reaching out to us, even in the most unlikely situations. When we know this, and with a bit of practice, we can pray anywhere! The following pages will guide you through a session of prayer, in six stages, including preparing your body and mind, and culminating in reflection on a scripture passage chosen specially for the day. The stages are:
The Presence of God

Freedom

Consciousness

The Word

Conversation

Conclusion
Although they are written in the first person -- "I" -- the prayers are for doing, rather than for reading out. Each stage is a kind of exercise or meditation aimed at helping you get in touch with God, and God's presence in your life.
